Spelling BeeOn Tuesday, February 28, 2017, starting at 8:15 in the Media Center, Central Middle School in Parsippany, NJ  hosted its THIRD Annual Spelling Bee. Sixty-one contestants from sixth, seventh and eighth grade  eagerly competed for the school championship. Mrs. Joanne Hirsch, Spelling Bee Coordinator and teacher of English for 37 years in the Parsippany Troy Hills school district  organized the competition based on the Scripps National Spelling Bee guidelines. Mrs. Nancy McMahon and Mr. Tom Curcio acted as judges and Mr. Tony Maccarella returned from retirement to resume his position as pronouncer.   Students were very excited and had been studying 300 challenging words in preparation for the competition. In light of the recent adoption of Core Content Standards, this competition provides the opportunity for improvement of spelling and vocabulary skills. After eight rounds of intense competition, Jamie Solomon (8th grade) was pronounced the winner of the THIRD Annual Spelling Bee by spelling the championship word “mazel tov” correctly.  She will  receive a plaque in her name and a free one year subscription to Encyclopaedia Britannica online, courtesy of Scripps.  The second place winner was a seventh grader Adrianna Bordonaro who will also receive a free one year subscription to Encyclopaedia Britannica online, courtesy of Scripps.
