6th Grade Math

Danielle Marino
Lauren Sharples
Susan Vicari

The purpose of this course is to extend and expand mathematical knowledge and skills developed in the elementary grades with emphasis on mathematical skills needed to demonstrate proficiency on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). This course is the first in the three-year middle school sequence. In Grade 6, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Brian Spatola

This course is the second in the three-year middle school sequence, which is designed to prepare students for higher-level mathematics, with emphasis on the mathematical skills needed to demonstrate proficiency on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). In Grade 7, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; (3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two- and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume; and (4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.

8th Grade Math

Jennifer Blanchard
MaryEllen O'Hara
Matthew Wilkie

The purpose of this course is to extend and expand mathematical knowledge and skills developed in the previous grades with emphasis on the mathematical skills needed to demonstrate proficiency on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC). This course is the last in the three-year middle school sequence and is designed to prepare the students for higher-level mathematics. In Grade 8, instructional time should focus on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

The curricula are aligned to the 2010 Common Core State Standards, and the 2014 NJ Standards for Technology Literacy. The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics. These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade. The standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live.
